Not So Secret

“The very fact that you work here should be kept confidential,” the orientation leader instructed the National Security Agency’s new recruits, my first wife included.  So you can imagine her shock that evening while buying groceries when the teenage checkout girl asked her “How do you like working at the NSA?”

Quickly my wife scanned her blouse to see if a forgotten ID badge blew her cover.  Nope.  No badge in sight.

“How did you know?” she asked.

“Your check,” the checkout girl said. Her check was issued by Tower Federal Credit Union, the NSA’s credit union and well-known to Columbia, MD cashiers.

In case you are curious, a check from Northwest Federal Credit Union means CIA.

About Steve Altes

I am iconoclastic, autodidactic, apothegmatic, and pugilistic. But most of all, I am someone who wonders what those words mean. I also write allegedly funny books, essays, speeches, and screenplays. But don't take my word for it. Google me, hombre.
